35th Annual
Seattle International Film Festival
May 21- June 14!
Introduce your community to extraordinary films from around the world.
The Seattle International Film Festival is here! The largest and most highly-attended film festival in the United States, showcasing more than 400 films from over 60 countries to an audience of 150,000 attendees annually. Listed by Variety as one of the world's “50 unmissable film festivals,” SIFF continues to be recognized as one of the top festivals in North America. SIFF combines the best aspects of a casual film marketplace with a well-established reputation as a great audience festival filmmakers love to attend.
On Memorial Day The 2009 Fly Films will screen to a packed house at the Egyptian Theatre in Capitol Hill. This May/June issue of the WIF website is devoted to the more than decade-long tradition of the Seattle International Film Festival Fly Filmmaking Challenge.
SIFF chose four local filmmakers, 3 narrative and one documentary, and three interestingly dark little stories written by local writers, in competition, which the narrative filmmakers chose at random out of a hat. (Make that a vintage fedora.) The narrative filmmakers were each given seven rolls of Black and White Super 16mm film, equipment and industry support, and four days to shoot. The documentary filmmaker showcased the other three filmmakers and their films with her own brand of Noir satire.
The Fly Filmmakers this year are Laura Jean Cronin, directing Arthur; Shawn Telford, directing Safe Passage; Tran Quoc Bao, directing Black Coffee; and Shannon Hart-Reed directing Anatomy of a Fly. Women in Film was represented well this year in the Flys. WIF member Barbara Brown produced WIF member Laura Jean Cronin's short film, and WIF member Ilona Rossman Ho produced WIF member Shannon Hart-Reed’s documentary. Safe Passage was written by WIF member Michael Raymond and co-produced by WIF member Amanda Bontecou. Virginia Bogert, president of WIF/Seattle produced all four short films for SIFF. Bogert, an award-winning producer/director whose diverse film career spans more than 20 years, said, “My passion is film, it continues to be a part of my life and career-I make them, and I help others make them. What drew me to producing the Fly Filmmaking Challenge was the prospect of encouraging and supporting filmmakers. Creativity always needs nurturing, and if I can do that for another filmmaker and help provide an incredible opportunity like this, life's good.”

The narrative filmmakers' challenges were: one unknown script, 7 rolls of film, 4 days to shoot, 5 days to edit, 2 days for post and music, for ten minutes on screen. Each film included an iconic Seattle landmark and each director had to appear a la Hitchcock in his or her film. The dark genre and the exigencies of shooting and lighting Chiaroscuro in B/W film with a somewhat limited amount of film honing the discipline of the directors who are often used to shooting on somewhat limitless tape. Open-handed support from the local industry in partnership with SIF made it possible for the filmmakers to shoot, produce, edit, and feed their volunteer cats and crew.

“While most of the films in the Seattle International Film Fest were years in the making, four were made in a matter of days. A look inside SIFF's Fly Filmmaking Competition, where a film is made on the fly, and where the operating belief is: great things can happen overnight.”
